BANNOCK, TARGHEE, AND RAYNOLDS PASSES August 5, 2020

Up early in the morning, I continued north on Interstate 15. My Maps navigator came in so handy. I have the car navigator and also my phone. I know now how many miles to a destination or how far and where the turns are. Taking a short hike at a rest area, then continuing north, I did more Supercharging in Idaho Falls, with a break, and to make sure that I didn't run out of charge. Continuing north on Interstate 15, exiting to take the highway to Leadore, ID, there was little traffic and I had to stop to use my pee bottle.

Coming finally to the turnoff for Bannock Pass, I was shocked to see the road turn to gravel. I had no idea of this till yesterday, but it said only 10 miles. I slowed down as there was dust, and I let other vehicles go by me. At the pass, there was an attractive young lady hiker, who said she was doing the CDT southbound. Sitting under her silver umbrella, having her lunch, I asked her about Grizzlies, and she said that she carried pepper spray. Calling it “pretty,” she had a long way to go. She claimed to have done the PCT, and also with lots of experience.

The gravel road continued down towards back to the Interstate, and I was so relieved when it turned back to pavement. Capturing the views ahead, I got back to 15 and headed south. With a Supercharge in Lima, MT, I had an apple pie at the nearby restaurant.

Following the Maps directions, I took a side road, and to my shock, it also turned to gravel. Passing ranches and through forests, I stopped at a point of interest. I didn’t wish for any damage to my electric car. Watching for bigger rocks, the road was okay. It finally turned back to pavement, and passing fishing resorts, I came to U. S. 20. With lots of traffic, I motored over Targhee Pass, then decided to continue to West Yellowstone. Only some 8 miles more after the pass, I just took photos and used the restroom. The tourists mostly didn’t wear masks, as I guess they must be idiots.

Back to the highway over Targhee Pass, I turned north on the highway U. S. 287 over Raynolds Pass. I had some fear of running out of charge, as it was a longer stretch to Butte, MT. The sky was beautiful with puffy clouds and deep blue sky. Lots of peaks and sights to see enroute.

Getting to Interstate 90, I headed west into Butte, MT. I charged up at the Supercharger, and then went to my motel. To bed early, I hadn’t yet become exhausted. I was enjoying my road trip, only a few days into it. I had no time to walk the historic district, where the motel was situated. I can do this later, and I did this in 1999 or when.
