PETE'S LAKE NATOMA LOOP HIKE INDEX 2006-2008

Seeking to maintain my hiking fitness, I learned of this fairly new portion of bike trail. Normally, I'd be climbing or skiing the peaks, but now with global warming, I seek to reduce my carbon footprint. For the price of two light rail tickets ($4, 2007), I get a ride out to, and back from, Historic Folsom Station. Starting and ending my hike from there, this saves the gallon of fuel I'd normally use. Though I am well aware of the impact of the local use of electricity (we are only about 50% clean--solar, wind, and hydro, 2006, SMUD), I think that doing this particular hike, using mass transit, saves the environment. Of course, there are no peaks to be climbed, with the elevations being mainly flat, but I can get a hundred feet, or two, of gain doing the 11 mile loop. There's a short side trip to the top of some tailings, too.
