TINKER KNOB 9X July 23, 2021

Seeing blue sky to the west, I had a quick breakfast, and feeling good, took Interstate 80 westbound to Donner Pass PCT trailhead. I started southbound on the PCT to run into several thru hikers. I gave away all my business cards, inviting them to stay at my place with a free buffet on me. It started to get smoky, with the wind blowing westward. I had fears of breathing unhealthy air, but by then, I was too close to the peak.

Summitting after some 4.5 hours of hiking, other hikers had made the top just as I got there. Capturing the hazy view, I had my soda and some energy food. Doing some selfie videos as proof that I did the near 8 mile hike to the top, this had been my longest day hike for years.

Not staying too long, I clambered down the slight class 2 summit trail, and back to the PCT, I ran into even more thru hikers. Many of them would get to Sierra City and then decide what to do, as a fire blocked the way north. I offered to take hikers around the fire, to Lassen Park, where they could resume their journey northbound.

Coming to Roller Pass, I spoke with some day hikers, and took a break with my can of diet soda, and donned my AirPods for the final last stretch. Getting a call on my phone, it was a thru hiker needing a ride from Truckee, to Reno. Close to the car, I said that I'd be there in half an hour.

Back to the trailhead, I stashed my pack and got to motoring with water still in my thermos canteen. My Watch had run out of charge, so I'd estimate for now, the total gain was over 2,600 feet round trip, over near 16 miles.

To the intersection in Truckee, I took four hikers to Reno, stuffing the car. They'd figure out the logistics, and to see what the smoke did. Dropping them off at a casino resort, I got back home with smoke blotting out the sunset.

Taking a cold shower, they had booked up their room, and due to the hotel terms, couldn't cancel or they'd lose their money. I hope that they message or call, as I'm ready to head off for destinations north. Eager to assist, they could pass the closed off fire area, and resume their journey northbound. I didn't get any messages from other thru hikers, so went out for two chicken tacos, then some beef jerky at home.

I had a delivery of a USB port to go with my new USB hard drives. Set for more storage, I'd format the drives for saving photo and movie libraries. I had to clear up space on my main computer, as the 4K movies look to have filled it up. Ready to get to motoring and transport thru hikers past the fire area, I was up at 3:30 a.m., to do webwork.
