Welcome to Pete's Thousand Peaks! This is the home page of Pete Yamagata!
The purpose of this web site is to promote climbing peaks, in a safe, enjoyable, successful, and responsible manner, throughout the Pacific West. I have completed now well over one thousand peak ascents, mostly in California, but also in other Western States.
My current 1,339 peak ascents have been completed over some 719 separate summits. My climbing is concentrated mainly in the Sierra Nevada, with various other ascents throughout the Southwestern Desert, the Great Basin, Coastal Ranges, and with several peak ascents in the Cascades and the Rockies.
A peak ascent is hereby defined as completing one ascent of one peak that is a listed peak, or comparable in difficulty to a listed peak. A listed peak is defined as one on the many peak lists of the various peak sections of the Angeles Chapter, Sierra Club.
So,
a repeated ascent counts as "one" for each additional
climb on a particular peak, from the car parking to the top and
back. Climbing, say, Pyramid Peak (9,983') twenty five times counts
as 25 peak ascents.
Most of the peaks are non-technical, although I have, in the deep past, successfully and safely completed a number of moderate Class 5 rock climbs, which I do not necessarily count as "peak ascents."
Being an avid Nikon photographer, I have captured over one hundred and thirty thousand 35mm Kodachrome slide film and Coolpix digital images of the summit views, ascent routes, and travel features enroute. And, thousands of photographs, with plenty of descriptive text, are displayed on this website!
It is my pleasure to give bona fide information on conditions, routes, and other advice on peak climbing. Feel free to contact me; I will be glad to advise!
All received messages will be personally acknowledged, usually immediately. E-mails with attached ads, or of similar construct, may be blocked by my ISP spam filter. Messages sent via free e-mail accounts, such as hotmail, netzero.net, and yahoo, usually have attached ads.
And hey, please visit SummitPost.org to click on "People," to search for "1000Pks" and, from my profile, view even more photos from my trips! Also, if you are unable to contact me by my e-mail links, here, please attempt to send a message by my PM link at my SummitPost profile page. You'll have to register, though, but this doesn't take too long.
Being a current member and former trip leader of
the Angeles Chapter, Sierra Club, I am also a member of the California
Mountaineering Club. Having achieved Senior Emblem status in the
Sierra Peaks Section, I need 4 more peaks to qualify me for the
SPS Master Emblem (175 total listed Sierra peaks needed). I have
completed 82 peaks on the Desert Peaks Section (99 total peaks)
peak list, and have completed 90 peaks on the Hundred Peaks Section
list. Also, I've climbed 279 peaks not on any Sierra Club peak
list.
I am also the author of the free-for-use, online Northern Sierra Peaks Guide, which details route directions on 86 peaks in or near the Northern Sierra Nevada, from roughly Adams Peak to Leavitt Peak. Having personally completed a total of over 300 peak ascents about the range of this Guide, all route descriptions are taken from notes made during my personal, actual, explorations.
Feel free to contact me should you need a companion to climb, hike, or ski locally. Also, please read my general terms and conditions of participation, and click "..agreed..." for trips planned, or to be decided upon! A good hiker should have no big problem going with me! Here's some personal information on what else that I enjoy.
I am currently retired, but of rather limited income, so a trip must be worthwhile to justify my driving. I believe strongly in conservation efforts, and generally support wilderness designation for most scenic roadless areas throughout the West.
